How we measure what matters
Beyond reach numbers, we track two metrics that connect our economic work to community health and unity.
Social Cohesion Index
We track the number of joint business ventures and positive daily interactions between host-community Zambian youth and refugee youth within our 50/50 hubs, as a measure of reduced social friction and growing community trust.
Community Leadership Agency
We measure the number of young people, especially young women, who go on to independently lead their own community-improvement projects within the settlements after completing our training.
Turning a challenge into a framework
During our Ndola pilot, we fell short of our 50/50 gender balance target. Severe cultural and religious barriers meant conservative families restricted young women from leaving home or joining the program, leaving our early cohorts heavily male-dominated.
Rather than accept this outcome, we used it to pivot. We launched direct, ongoing dialogue sessions with parents and relatives to introduce our Two Hands family provision framework: addressing families' anxieties, building trust, and preparing safe, transparent hub spaces directly inside the Meheba and Mayukwayukwa settlements. This work now positions us to achieve and protect 50/50 gender balance and support young women through to successful completion of our programs.
